Explain any four reasons how the initial enthusiasm of the people of France soon turned to hostility after Napoleon’s takeover of France.

(i) Initially, in many places such as Holland and Switzerland, as well as in certain cities like Brussels, Mainz, Milan and Warsaw, the French armies were welcomed as harbingers of liberty.
(ii) The local population turned to hostility because they were loosing political freedom.
(iii) Increased taxation and censorship outweighted the advantages of the administrative changes.
(iv) People were called upon to supply soldiers and the forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger.
